2004 MAGNUSON AWARD
RECIPIENT: STEPHEN FAUSTI
Stephen A. Fausti, Ph.D., ACOS & Director of
the VA RR&D National Center for Rehabilitative
Auditory Research (NCRAR) and Professor in the
Department of Otolaryngology, OHSU, has received
the 2004 Paul B. Magnuson Award for Outstanding
Achievement in Rehabilitation Research and
Development. The award is presented annually to a
VA RR&D investigator who exemplifies the
entrepreneurship, humanitarianism, and dedication
to veterans displayed by Dr. Magnuson during his
career. It is the highest award for rehabilitation
research investigators. Dr. Patricia Dorn,
Assistant Director for RR&D Service, presented
the award to Dr. Fausti Wednesday, March 31, in
Salt Lake City, Utah at the American Academy of
Audiology National Convention.
Fausti has gained international recognition for
his pioneering research and clinical expertise in
assessing high-frequency auditory sensitivity and
using high-frequency testing for early
identification of hearing loss caused by
ototoxicity. His work led to national guidelines
for early identification and monitoring of
ototoxicity. Dr. Fausti established the National
Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research in 1997
at the Portland VA Medical Center to conduct
research to increase knowledge about hearing
impairment and to develop technology to improve the
care and treatment of veterans with hearing loss.
The Magnuson Award consists of a one-time $5,000
cash prize, $50,000 per year for up to three years
to supplement his ongoing peer-reviewed research,
and a celebratory plaque.
