Oregon or Bust! The Trail to Better Hearing

Join us for our 33rd annual conference, in Portland, Oregon, from February 21-23, 2008, at the Marriot Downtown Waterfront Hotel next to the beautiful Willamette River. The city of Portland, Oregon has been proclaimed as North America's "Best Big City," according to Money magazine. Though it's not easy being green, it's exactly why so many visitors flock to Portland for its unmatched natural beauty, bustling local scene, sumptuous dining and welcoming accommodations -- all effortlessly accessed thanks to its justly-famous light-rail system http://www.travelportland.com.

Nestled between the beautiful Coast Range on the west and the spectacular Cascade Range on the east, Portland sits at the junction of the Columbia and Willamette rivers. From downtown Portland, it's just a 90 minute drive to the scenic Oregon coast or to Mt. Hood and some of the best skiing in the country, 30 minutes to the peaceful vineyards and farms of the fertile Willamette Valley.

This year's invited speakers are giants in their fields!

Ioan Allen, Senior Vice President of Dolby Laboratories will give this year's Luncheon Presentation, entitled "Audio in the Movie Theatre - Spectacular, Impactful, or Just Too Loud?" This talk will include history of sound in film, contributions to the field made by Dolby for improving sound in film, how sound is created in the present day film, and of course, why are trailers so darn loud!?

Sharon Kujawa, Ph.D., Director of Audiology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Associate Professor of Otology and Laryngology at Harvard Medical School, will give this year's keynote presentation "Noise Exposure: Acute Insults and Delayed Neurodegenerative Outcomes." Dr. Kujawa will discuss her work showing how early noise exposure can lead to greater degrees of hearing loss later in life, as well as newer findings that suggest this latent vulnerability is not just a problem unique to young ears. And it is safe to say, the popular "Turn it to the Left" educational rap song will make its way into her lecture!

The Friday night special event is scheduled at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) which is only minutes from the hotel and visible from across the river (http://www.omsi.edu). We will enjoy dinner and drinks with a spectacular view of the Portland skyline plus our own private use of the interactive Dangerous Decibels® exhibit and a planetarium show - all under one roof!

Make sure to come early and be a part of our NHCA Scholarship Foundation fundraisers. This year we have a new event - a bowling tournament! Plus the return of a motorcycle ride. The events will take place on the Wednesday before the conference (February 20th).

And for those who just can't get enough, join us for an after-conference Oregon Adventure with Dr. Billy Martin (Sunday, February 24th). If you are willing to brave the weather and do a bit of easy hiking in order to see some of the most magnificent waterfalls in the nation, Billy Martin is offering to take a group to his favorite sites in the Columbia Gorge. We will enjoy a late lunch at McMenamin's unique Edgefield Manor (http://www.mcmenamins.com) with eight different restaurants, brewpubs, distilleries and wine tasting room, arriving back at your hotel room by 3:00 p.m.

Watch for the arrival of your electronic registration brochure in October. You don't want to miss this jam-packed educational opportunity including exhibitors, posters, chat sessions, networking and fun! Share this information with anyone you know who would benefit from attending and will thank you in the end. Come experience the big city excitement and small town charm of Portland, Oregon, and join us for the NHCA 33rd Annual Conference, February 21-23, 2008!
