NIDCD ADMINISTRATIVE RESEARCH
SUPPLEMENTS TO JUNIOR ORL FACULTY
The NIDCD has long recognized the compelling
need to recruit otolaryngologists into its research
enterprise to facilitate translation of fundamental
scientific discoveries in hearing and other
communication disorders from
bench-to-bedside. Yet, the rigors of
surgical training (in addition to other factors)
have challenged realization of this goal.
Click
here to view a new initiative, NIDCD
Administrative Research Supplements to Promote
Emergence of Independent
Otolaryngologist-Investigators, piloted by the
NIDCD in response to this challenge.
The goal of this initiative is to provide junior
clinical faculty in otolaryngology with limited
research backgrounds, but keen interests in
building a clinician-investigator career
trajectory, with research experiences (50% effort
over two years) within the NIDCD scientific mission
on ongoing NIDCD-funded R01 or P50 research
programs within their institutions. Such
individuals would not be yet be competitive for
NIDCD mentored clinician-scientist K-awards or R03
awards. To capture 50% of the professional time of
junior surgical faculty, we will provide up to
$100k Direct Cost per year to each awardee. The
expectation is that awardees would craft and submit
their K08, K23 or R03 application during Year Two
of the supplemental award.
Please share this initiative with any eligible,
interested junior otolaryngology faculty in your
department and institution. Note that the first of
two submission dates is May 1, 2008. Please
contact me (or encourage others to contact me)
concerning any questions about this initiative.
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Dan Sklare
