OBITUARY: EDGAR SHAW, BBC, PHD,
FRSC

SHAW, Edgar Albert George, BSc, PhD, FRSC; July
10 1921 - October 18 2009 Beloved husband of the
late Millicent (Chandler) Shaw, Edgar Shaw died
peacefully in hospital on the evening of October
18th, 2009 with the love of his family by his side.
Dr. Shaw was born in Teddington, Middlesex,
England. He began his formal education as a
scholarship student at Harrow School and finished
it by completing a doctorate at Imperial College,
London. Edgar's informal learning continued
throughout his life.During World War II, Edgar
served with the British Ministry of Aircraft
Production. His work on the development of radar in
London, Washington DC and New York City, was vital
to the war effort. Dr. Shaw had a long and
successful career in acoustics during his
employment at the National Research Council (NRC)
in Ottawa. Among his many innovations is the
miniaturized probe microphone for measuring the
interactions of sound waves with the human ear. He
became a leading international authority on both
the inner and outer human ear. He was president of
the Acoustical Society of America 1973-74. The
Royal Society of Canada elected Dr. Shaw to their
fellowship in 1975. In 1979, the Institute of
Physics awarded him their annual prize for
outstanding contributions to acoustics, the
Rayleigh medal. On his retirement from the NRC in
1986, Dr. Shaw was granted the status of Researcher
Emeritus. Edgar was an insightful, generous, wise
and kind man. He was respectful of all, regardless
of their station in life. A Service to Celebrate
his Life will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian
Church, 82 Kent Street (at Wellington), Ottawa on
Saturday, October 24th at 11 a.m. Memorial
