August 13, 1999 - The
Association for Research in Otolaryngology (ARO)
announced today that it has launched a new
scientific peer-reviewed journal to be called the
Journal of the Association for
Research in Otolaryngology. The first
issue will be published in the first quarter of the
year 2000.
JARO will publish the highest
quality research findings from all disciplines
related to otolaryngology and communications
sciences, including hearing, balance, the chemical
senses, voice, speech, and laryngeal function. The
journal publishes papers presenting studies of
basic and clinical significance in both humans and
animal models, describing experimental and
theoretical studies of the processes that underlie
evolution, development, structure, function,
etiology and intervention.
JARO will be printed quarterly
in the traditional paper format and also will have
a companion electronic version available on the
world wide web. Papers will be available
electronically as soon as accepted manuscripts have
been copyedited and proofread. Thus, papers will
become available electronically before they appear
in print.
The creation of the new journal
follows several years of careful planning and
fulfils the desire of the ARO memberhip to
transform the ARO from a scientific organization to
a scholarly society. A hallmark of the new journal,
as expressed by the ARO membership, is to publish
only the highest quality research papers in
otolaryngology.
JARO and its copyrights are
owned solely by the association but will be
published in partnership with Springer-Verlag, Inc.
Springer-Verlag has been a well-known name in
scientific publishing for over 100 years. They are
very experienced in both printed and electronic
publishing and are positioned very well to keep
abreast with the rapidly changing publishing world.
This partnership between the ARO and
Springer-Verlag will ensure that JARO will
remain the highest quality scientific journal from
now into the future.
Richard A. Chole, MD/PhD, President
of the ARO, established a publications committee to
oversee the overall direction of JARO from
the association's perspective. He named Gerald R.
Popelka, PhD and Arthur N. Popper, PhD. co-chairs
of this committee. Both Dr. Popelka and Dr. Popper
are long term members of the ARO and chaired the
committee of ARO members who developed the proposal
to launch the journal. The scientific direction and
editorship of the journal will be under the
leadership of Eric D. Young, PhD, Editor-in-Chief.
Dr. Young, a very prominent scientist in the field,
has brought together an editorial
board of associate editors from among the most
prominent scientists in the world.
A call for papers already has been
announced. Please connect to the JARO
web site for more information.
