The major
international society for the exchange of
scientific information in Otolaryngology
The Association for Research in
Otolaryngology (ARO) is an international scientific
society composed of basic scientists and clinicians
who are actively investigating basic science and
clinical problems associated with hearing, speech,
balance, smell, taste and diseases of the head and
neck. The ARO provides a forum for the interchange
of information through its peer reviewed journal,
JARO, and via two professional yearly meetings:
· The ARO
MidWinter Meeting
· The Research Forum which is
co-sponsored by ARO and the American Academy of
Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Foundation
(AAO-HNSF).
There currently are over 2100 members
from 39 different countries in the ARO.
Approximately half of these members have earned an
M.D. degree while the rest have earned a Ph.D.
degree or hold both degrees. Approximately 25% of
ARO members reside outside of the United
States.
BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP:
SUBSCRIPTION TO JARO,
JOURNAL OF THE ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH IN
OTOLARYNGOLOGY
Membership in ARO includes a
subscription to JARO which brings together
research findings from all disciplines related
to Otolaryngology and Communications
Sciences.
A REDUCTION IN FEES CHARGED
FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE ASSOCIATION'S
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.
The MidWinter
Meeting is held each year. The program
includes both contributed paper sessions and
special seminars, workshops and a short course
with invited speakers on topics of current
interest and importance to the ARO membership.
The meeting abstracts are available in printed
version to meeting attendees and may be
purchased by others for a small fee. The
abstracts are also available on the ARO website.
The ARO encourages an informal atmosphere at
this meeting in order that the participants have
maximal opportunity to exchange information.
This informal setting is especially important
for young scientists or clinicians in their
attempt to learn about the broad field of
scientific Otolaryngology.
The Research Forum is held in
early fall in conjunction with the annual
meeting of AAO/HNSF. The program consists of
contributed papers, many given by medical
residents who have participated in a major
research project.
OPPORTUNITY TO SPONSOR AN
ABSTRACT FOR THE ARO MIDWINTER MEETING
Members of ARO are entitled to
sponsor one abstract annually for the MidWinter
Meeting, either their own or for a scientist who
may or may not be a member of the
association.
ARO MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY and
LISTING ON THE ARO
WEBSITE
Updated annually, the .pdf version
of the directory contains names, addresses,
telephone, fax numbers and e-mail addresses of
all members as well as the bylaws of the
association. The searchable public directory is
updated weekly on the ARO website.
UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION
OF INTEREST TO THOSE IN THE FIELD OF
OTOLARYNGOLOGY
ARO members are kept informed
about ARO business and other topics pertinent to
research in Otolaryngology through the ARO
website http://www.aro.org and through a mass
e-mail service. Through selected mass e-mails,
members are kept up to date on critical issues
related to research in Otolaryngology such as
pending legislation and policies of funding
agencies and other issues that could have an
impact on research. The ARO website provides
information on ARO and on current scientific
research in the field of Otolaryngology. The
website includes announcements and a calendar of
events related to the field of Otolaryngology,
career opportunities, information on the ARO
MidWinter Meeting, searchable abstracts from
1993 to the present, the Research Forum, JARO,
and a resource library of related websites and
electronic media.
PARTICIPATION IN THE
GOVERNANCE OF THE ASSOCIATION INCLUDING
COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP AND THE CHOICE OF OFFICERS
AND COUNCIL
Members are eligible to serve on
committees and therefore contribute to the
establishment of association priorities and
programs. An election for the leaders governing
the ARO is conducted annually. Business meetings
are held annually during the association's
MidWinter Meeting.
