President's Report

The program is complete for the Midwinter meeting. There are 844 contributed and invited abstracts now available for your review on the ARO home page (http://www.aro.org/showcase/aro/). The program is also there. Jerry Popelka should be thanked for his continued efforts to bring the ARO into the electronic age. The invited program includes an all day Presidential Symposium entitled ÒAuditory Plasticity: Cellular, Theoretical, and Applied IssuesÓ on Sunday. This program, developed by Ed Rubel and me, will provide an overview of our knowledge of plasticity from the molecular level to clinical applications with cochlear implants and new imaging techniques. A special Presidential Lecture will be delivered by James Battey, Ph.D., Director of the NIDCD Intramural Research Program prior to the ARO Business Meeting on February 5. Workshops include NIH Research and Research Training Support (Sunday, 6:30 pm); a special workshop targeted for basic scientists outlining the clinical management dilemmas associated with MénièreÕs Disease (Sunday, 8:00 pm); Hearing and Acoustic Behavior of Cetaceans (Tuesday, 7:00 pm); Recent Advances in Human Temporal Bone Histopathology (Wednesday, 2:00-6:00 pm); Science, Scholarship, and Communication via the Internet (Wednesday, 8:00-10:00 pm). Contributed papers have been allocated to fourteen podium sessions and four poster sessions with 35 separate categories. The Award of Merit this year is being shared by two distinguished scientists, Isolde Thalmann and Ruediger Thalmann. They have been pioneers in inner ear fluid biochemistry. Their continued microanalytical analysis of the micro environment of the cochlea has heightened our understanding of cochlear function and will assist our molecular biological probing of this organ in the future. Congratulations for this well deserved recognition! Florida promises warm weather and gentle breezes! Make your reservations today. See you on St. Pete Beach!
