Purpose:

The committee nominates a person or persons for the Annual Award of Merit presentation. Council makes the final decision as to the recipient. The committee is to assist the president in bringing the recipient to the MidWinter meeting to attend the Awards ceremony. Its charges are to 1) generate a list of nominees using input from the committee members and the general membership as provided by the annual questionnaire; 2) decide on the most deserving candidate among the list of nominees; 3) arrange for the awards ceremony at the MidWinter meeting. Membership selection: Five members should be selected for this committee according to the general guidelines for standing committees. In addition, this committee should consist of senior investigators collectively representing a broad research perspective.

Guidelines:

The following are ARO's Principles and Guidelines for the selection of the Award of Merit recipient

In accordance with the Bylaws of the ARO, article IX, section I.g, which state that "the Council may acknowledge the outstanding accomplishments of individuals by citation of awards. Such citations or awards shall be approved by a two-thirds majority vote of the Council and presented by the president", the Awards Committee in past years, has recommended an individual to the council who was deemed to have made an outstanding Scientific contribution to the field of Otolaryngology. This document represents an initial attempt to formalize the process by which this individual is chose. In the past, individuals have served on the awards committee of one year. It's proposed that a three year tenure be instituted. In this way a continuity of the process may be established

  • The primary goal of the award of Merit is to recognize an individual who has made substantial scientific achievements and contributions to the fields encompassed by otolaryngology.
  • The procedure for choosing this individual shall be as follows:
    • The Awards committee will select five nominees from names supplied by the membership through the annual questionnaire and other sources.
    • The Committee will forward these five names to the past winners who will identify the person that they feel has made the greatest scientific contribution. Provide list to ARO Executive Office for file.
    • The Committee will use the recommendations thus received as well as the considerations outlined in Item III below to determine the top two candidates to be submitted to Council.
    • The list of non-winning nominees with the number of votes received will be carried over to the following year and a record will be passed on to subsequent committees of how many years the nominee has been on the list.
  • The committee shall reserve the privilege of taking into account other considerations. The first of these would be the seniority of the nominees. This shall be a factor if the leader of two otherwise equally qualified candidates is infirmed. The committee shall also take into consideration, and therefore give priority to an equally qualified candidate whose field has traditionally been underrepresented by the ARO. Other such examples will undoubtedly arise, but should be substantially justified in each case.
