The importance of ARO at any age is that it represents great science and a strong sense of collegiality among its members. We grew by a quantum step in 1984 and we moved from St. Pete Beach to Clearwater. For many of us old timers something was lost in that move in smallness and in closeness. But it's clear even to us that we can't go home and that in reality ARO's future success will depend upon its ability to attract the best science from all of the many and diverse fields that make up our-discipline. Happy birthday, 10-year-old!

Bill Stebbins, Ph.D.
President 1984
