Applications for ARO Graduate Student/ Postdoctoral Fellow Travel Awards: Call for Applications 

Application period is September 1-September 30, 2017

The Association for Research in Otolaryngology (ARO) announces that applications are being accepted September 1- September 30, 2017 for travel awards for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to attend the 2017 ARO MidWinter Meeting being held February 9-14, 2018 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel in San Diego, California, USA. Awards of $500 each are being offered to defray travel and lodging costs associated with attendance at the ARO's annual meeting. The winners of the ARO Travel Awards will be selected by a committee appointed by the ARO President.

The purpose of the award is to encourage graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to attend the Midwinter Meeting and become active in the ARO. These travel awards are made possible by a grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) of the National Institutes of Health.

Individuals from groups historically under-represented in the biomedical sciences are highly encouraged to apply.  Members of these under-represented groups include those identifying as African American, Hispanic, Native American, Alaskan native, or Pacific Islander.  Under-represented groups would also include those individuals with a physical disability such as a loss of hearing, vision, or mobility, as well as individuals with a psychiatric or learning disability, etc. 

Individuals selected will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be current ARO members at the time of application and at the time of the MidWinter Meeting.
  • Applicants must be full-time graduate students or postdoctoral research fellows carrying out research pertinent to the interests of ARO. Medical students, Residents and MD researchers should not apply for these awards.
  • Applicants must be the presenting author on an abstract submitted for the 2018 ARO Midwinter Meeting
  • Applicants must demonstrate clear need for financial assistance for attending the ARO Midwinter Meeting

Prospective candidates should complete the electronic application form (which will be posted on the ARO Registration website) and provide the following documents, via upload, when submitting their application:

  • A letter from the applicant stating desire, qualification, and why the Travel Award will be of benefit to you for the award based on the stated criteria (two page limit).

  • A copy of the submitted abstract for poster or podium presentation at the 2018 ARO MidWinter Meeting. The original must have been submitted via the electronic abstract submission site by deadline to submit (see

  • Letter of recommendation from the graduate training supervisor, director of the graduate program, or department chairman, including a guarantee of funds to pay the balance of travel expenses**

** NOTE: If more than one applicant comes from a program, the supervisor/director/chairman must prioritize the applicants.
